About Books

"A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend." ~Author Unknown

"Many people, other than the authors, contribute to the making of a book, from the first person who had the bright idea of alphabetic writing through the inventor of movable type to the lumberjacks who felled the trees that were pulped for its printing.  It is not customary to acknowledge the trees themselves, though their commitment is total." ~Forsyth and Rada, Machine Learning

"Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book."  ~Author Unknown

About Books

Types of Books

Like all forms of artistic creation, books come in many genres. The most popular kinds of books include autobiographies, which is the story of someone's life, or an event in their life recounted by the person.

Biographies, are another popular genre. A biography describes the life or events on the life of a person, but is written by another.

Science Fiction books have been popular for decades, and are usually set at some point in the future. Old science fiction books that talk of the years we are currently living through make fascinating reading, and in many ways our modern technology has surpassed the imaginings of our forefathers.

Fables are popular with children, and usually contain a moral. Many fables are explained by animal characters.

Romance novels are immensely popular, with pioneer Jane Austen's " Pride and Prejudice (Bantam Classics)" being one of the earliest, and most famous works of the genre. Other popular romance writers include Barbara Cartland and Catherine Cookson. According to Wikipedia, in 2004, romance novels comprised 55 percent of all paperback sales in the United States.

Child Authors

Child Authors

For hundreds of years, children have written books and many have succeeded in getting them published. One of the earliest-known child authors was Francis Hawkins. His book "Youth Behavior" was a guide to teach children good manners.

Two British schoolgirls wrote a book for children, after having an idea when sheltering from the rain. Their book " Far Distant Oxus" was published in 1937, around one year later. Although the girls were only 15 and 16 years old at the time, their book was acclaimed by critics to be a classic.

One of youngest publish authors is Dorothy Straight, who was only 4 years old when she wrote " How the World Began." It was published in 1964.

One of the many inspirational children to publish a book was Jamie Dewitt. In 1984, Jamie published " Jamie's Turn (Adventure Diary)." The book describes an event that occured on his family's farm. The amazing thing related to Jamie and his book, is he has a learning disability and finds it hard to describe his thoughts.

Jason Gaes, who was stricken with a rare cancer at the age of 7, wrote a heart-rendingly inspirational book titled " My Book for Kids With Cansur: A Child's Autobiography of Hope." His twin brother illustrated the book, with help from elder brother Adam. Happily, Jason survived his childhood cancer, but his book remains an inspiration for many children with cancer and their parents today.
